CRYPTOFACE FAQ
What is CryptoFace?
One of the first attempts of on-chain digital identity on Ethereum.
What is OPP?
Operation pre-punk (OPP) was used as a codename during development.
How old is it?
The contract was created on March 14, 2017, roughly 3 months before CryptoPunks.
Was CryptoFace an NFT?
The original contract predated ERC721 and ERC1155 standards, and did not "mint" actual tokens. Rather, it allowed one to register unique hashes that corresponded to SVG art into the contract itself. It did not include a transfer function for these hashes.
How was this project resurrected?
One of our earliest IlluminatiNFT holders, Brother Nathan (@natmyhat), reached out to the team early on with his discovery of CryptoFace. He shared with us a great write up of what he thought was an interesting opportunity. Once the IlluminatiDAO token was distributed and we began to put proposals out, the community was briefed on the opportunity, and we quickly approved the necessary funding to resurrect the project.
How does this mint work?
Minting for IlluminatiNFT and 187 holders is live and will be open for 30 days from October 3rd.
Simultaneously, we are launching a premint for 685 spots. These 685 free mints are available to the public. To enter the premint follow this link.
After the premint raffle is over and the winners are notified, the final 1,000 mints will be raffled to goblintown holders. 250 spots will be raffled to goblin holders each week for 4 weeks. 1 goblin = 1 ticket and no goblin token can win twice (but a single holder can win for as many goblins as they have). Goblins do not need to do anything to enter.
All unclaimed mints will be claimed by the DAO, who will vote on any next steps.
All mints register a hash on the original contract, which you can find here here.
How do royalties work?
As the original artist/creator of a unique work, you are entitled to benefit from future sales of that token. Pursuant to the terms of your agreement with the IlluminatiNFT DAO, made at time of mint, you may be entitled to 3% of all future royalties of your token as the creator.
With our royalty contract, you will receive the ETH owed to you based on the last sale of your token after the next transfer of any CryptoFace token. For example, if CryptoFace #100 sells for 1 ETH, 0.03 ETH is sent to the royalty contract. Once another token is sold or transfered, the 0.03 ETH is then transfered to the original minter of CryptoFace #100.
What changes were made to the O.G. DAPP?
The svg generator/dapp is the same one used by the original Cryptoface project and has its limitations. We are not able to restrict certain abuse of the generator to produce interesting images. Have fun!
On the UI, We removed the ability to resize the full avatar in order to ensure the collection has some semblance of actual avatars.
We named the various traits and indicated resized traits as "adjusted." All colors are named using The ColorAPI to interpret the hex codes.
Finally, the DAO voted to change two things. The first was to change sex/gender to show only the silhouette with Body A and Body B. The second was to remove a mustache option that could be primed for abuse and shine negatively on the project as a whole.
Was CryptoFace unknown?
Yes and No. Some crypto historians were aware of its existence, but the project was never brought into the contemporary NFT mainstream. This is likely due to the fact that the contract recorded hashes internally, and did not actively provide a way to visualize one’s avatar. Avatar attributes were encoded on-chain, but were of little use without the (now deprecated) O.G. DAPP. There is no hard-coded supply cap for the O.G. contract, limiting capitalistic R&D. These have been barriers for anybody pondering what to do with CryptoFace.
Is the O.G. project actually historically significant?
Yes, since it is an early attempt on Ethereum for PFP generation that happens to pre-date Cryptopunks. There was also stated intent for CryptoFace as a tool for identity as well as individualized, unique profile pictures. To date, the DAO has been unable to identify Larva Labs’ original intent beyond digital collectible art. We do not seek to diminish the amazing impact Punks has had on the space; however, the CryptoFace timing and intent grants it historical significance given the entire space has been heavily dominated by PFP projects.
Are these NFTs minted by the reincarnated project historically significant?
Yes. When using the new DAPP, the minting wallet records their hash in the original contract and also receives an ERC-721 from a new contract in the same transaction. The original minter is licensing out their hash from the O.G. contract to any subsequent owner in exchange for a 3% royalty (out of 7.5% total) whenever the ERC-721 is exchanged in the future. We also believe that creating a 10K project with such a historical connection via this novel licensing scheme is in itself, historical.
Why this project?
The timing and intent of CryptoFace were found to be historically interesting and relevant. We became more dedicated and excited as we found challenges and solutions requiring innovation. We wanted to push ourselves as a community, and also and push the boundaries on what approaches are viable to resurrect an old project.
Why a 10K collection?
We believe creating a finite collection on top of the historical project was the best way to approach to resurrecting CryptoFace. There may be future attempts to build interesting things on the original contract but they will never be part of the first collection made. Keeping it open and infinite would severely impact its significance.
Can anyone create a collection based on the O.G. contract?
Yes, there is no limit. We believe there is value in being the first to put out a collection on top of the historic contract.
Can anyone use the approach at licensing and royalties?
Yes. We think this approach may have utility for the community beyond this collection. You can find our royalty contract here.
Where does “CryptoPunks v1” fit into the timeline of other projects?
The V1 punk contract was minted on June 9, 2017, which was followed by the (official) punks on June 22, 2017. CrytoFace was minted on March 14, 2017.
Any fun facts about the O.G. DAPP?
Yeah, it included a field where the user could manually enter their private key to mint, along with a message that "You can use Metamask extension for better security."
Do other historical NFTs lack a transfer function?
Yes. The first ethereum NFT is arguably Terra Nullius (2015). Similar to CryptoFace, the Terra Nullius contract included no transfer function.
Was O.G. CryptoFace in the news?
The first ENS contract was March 10, 2017 which was four days prior to CryptoFace. A daily news Bitcointalk thread "Ethereum Project NEWS 15-03-2017" featured a mention of the new CryptoFace project as well as announcing an official delay of the ENS launch (quoting their lead dev @nicksdjohnson).
Also, in an r/Ethereum discussion on CryptoFace, the developer participated in chats on using the Avatar as a means of being anon and sharing a pseudo-identity, as well as discussion of using the Avatars in social apps, in particular crypto (decentralized) social apps.
What about that logo?
The origin of the CryptoFace logo is currently unknown. It’s a classic.
